GOLD DOLLARS
1851-D G$1 PCGS AU 55 $ 3,800.
A nice example of a Type I gold dollar that is highlighted by
its beautiful orange peel toning.
1852-D G$1 NGC AU 55 $ 3,650.
1853-D G$1 NGC AU 55 $ 3,650.
1858-D G$1 PCGS AU 55 $ 4,350.
A choice about uncirculated specimen that is bright and
lustrous. The strike on this coin is far superior to most
known examples, the obverse hair detail and the fully struck
date on the reverse combine to make this coin stand out in
many ways.
The rarity of branch mint gold issues is
exacerbated by the fact that no numismatist
studied or collected them until decades
after they were issued, by which time many
pieces had long since disappeared. It was
not until 1893 that Augustus Heaton published
his famous booklet on collecting by mintmark
varieties. Those who heeded Heaton's enticements
to collect mintmarks usually concentrated on
silver coins. Collecting gold coins by mintmark
did not become widespread until well into the
twentieth century, and it was not until the 1940's
that an intense passion for collecting them
developed.
1859-D G$1 PCGS MS 61 $ 12,500.
A top of the line coin in all aspects, EX-AMON CARTER
collection * lot 490 * Stack's * January 1984 auction
where it was graded brilliant uncirculated. A perfect coin
for a high grade type set of "D" mint gold coins, high grade
and with a super pedigree.
QUARTER EAGLES
1839-D $2.5 PCGS XF 45 $ 3,850.
A major type coin within the "D" mint series, like the 38-D &
39-D half eagles, the mint mark is on the obverse of the
coin. Very few uncirculated specimens are known and AU coins
are rare and very tough to locate. Most coins of this date
are weak struck on the hair curls on the obverse and on the
eagle's wing on the reverse. A strong strike and pleasing
original surfaces give this Dahlonega coin great eye appeal.
1849-D $2.5 PCGS AU 50 $ 3,250.
1850-D $2.5 PCGS XF 40 $ 1,500.
An nice original coin that is perfect for the grade.
1850-D $2.5 PCGS AU 50 $ 3,250.
A choice about uncirculated coin that is exceptionally well
struck, with lustrous problem free surfaces. The denticles
more distinct that on most examples seen.
1853-D $2.5 PCGS AU 50 $ 4,850.
Scarce in all grades and is exceedingly rare in full mint
state with only a few pieces known in that grade level. A
lustrous example with delicate orange toning.
1857-D $2.5 PCGS MS 60 $ 14,500.
Common as a date but extremely rare in mint state condition.
Tied with one other coin as the " FINEST KNOWN " by PCGS.
