The Templeton Reid is one of the greatest rarities among privately-issued American gold coins. During the past quarter-century the appearance of the Nygren/Garrett Specimen was the first time that a $5 Templeton Reid had appeared on the market in many years. The price realized was $200,000, paid by Hancock & Harwell in the John Work Garrett sale in 1979.
